How to Choose the Perfect Turkey for Your Thanksgiving Feast
Thanksgiving only comes once a year, and when it does, the turkey takes center stage on the table. Whether you’re hosting a crowd or keeping things cozy, choosing the right bird makes all the difference between a good meal and a truly memorable one. Here’s your insider’s guide to picking the perfect turkey--from the butcher’s block to your holiday table.
Fresh vs. Frozen
A fresh turkey has never been frozen and should be cooked within a few days of purchase. The big benefit? Texture and flavor. Fresh birds tend to roast up juicier and more tender. Also, no thawing time required.

A frozen turkey is convenient for shopping early and avoiding the last minute holiday rush. Just make sure to allow ample time for thawing. A good rule of thumb is one day in the fridge for every 4–5 pounds of bird. Alternatively, 30 minutes per pound submerged in cold water is an option. If using the cold water option, please be sure to change the cold water every 30 minutes and cook the turkey immediately after thawing.

What Size Turkey Do You Need?
Here’s a simple rule of thumb:
1–1.5 pounds per person if you want a little leftover.
1.75–2 pounds per person if you’re planning for sandwiches or turkey soup the next day (and let’s be honest…you are).
So, for a gathering of eight, a 12–14 lb bird hits the sweet spot.
Hosting a bigger crew? Go larger--or consider splitting two smaller turkeys, which may cook more evenly and finish faster.
Timing Is Everything
Order early. Thanksgiving is the Super Bowl of turkey season, and the best birds go fast.
Place your online order at least 2-3 weeks in advance, if possible.
Don’t forget the stock. Additionally, grab turkey wings, necks, or our homemade gravy.
